WHY THIS MATTERS
When Minutes Matter, Documents Matter
"You're rushing to the hospital after receiving a call that your loved one has been admitted. When you arrive and ask to speak with the doctor — you're told: 'We can't share any information with you.'"
This happens every day. Without a notarized Medical Power of Attorney, even spouses and adult children can be shut out of critical medical decisions. HIPAA laws are strict — and they don't make exceptions for love or family. A properly executed and notarized healthcare directive changes everything. leumaS helps families get these documents done before the emergency — and during it when necessary.

BEFORE THE VISIT
What to Have Ready
✓ Notify the facility in advance that a notary will be visiting
✓ Confirm the patient is conscious, alert, and able to sign voluntarily
✓ Government-issued photo ID for the signer if available
✓ Documents fully prepared — do not have the patient sign before the notary arrives
✓ Check witness requirements for your document type
✓ Have contact information for the attending nurse or social worker
Important: The notary must verify that the signer is of sound mind and signing voluntarily. If there are concerns about the patient's mental capacity, consult with the attending physician before scheduling the notary visit.

FAQ
Common Questions
Can you come to a hospital same-day?
Yes — same-day healthcare facility visits are prioritized whenever possible. Call us directly at (804) 495-1517 for the fastest response on urgent requests. We understand these situations can't always wait.
What if the patient can't hold a pen or sign their full name?
Virginia law makes provisions for signature by mark when a person is physically unable to write their full signature. The notary can assist — contact us to discuss the specific situation before the appointment.
Do hospitals allow notaries to visit patients?
Most hospitals allow notary visits with advance notice and coordination with the nursing staff or social worker. We recommend calling the facility ahead of time to confirm their visitor policy and notify the patient's care team.
What if the patient is in intensive care or unable to have visitors?
If an in-person visit is not possible, RON may be an option depending on the patient's condition and the document type. Contact us to discuss the situation and we'll help find the best solution.
Can you work with the patient's attorney or social worker directly?
Absolutely — leumaS regularly coordinates with hospital social workers, discharge planners, and elder law attorneys to arrange healthcare facility signings. We're happy to communicate directly with your team to make the process as smooth as possible.
